Care and Cleaning instructions - print << Previous

The carpet´s good appearance and the maintenance of its value depend largely on its correct care and cleaning, with the care of a heavy-duty woollen loop carpet (HØJER KONTRAKT®) requiring special attention.

Colour and pattern

When selecting wall-to-wall carpeting it is important to consider that visible marks are more noticeable with light colours rather than dark ones. Blended or patterned carpets are generally better than single colours in this regard. According to this rule, textile floor coverings show dirt decreasingly according to the following colour sequence: white-beige-grey-red-blue-green-brown. However, even the most sophisticated pattern cannot conceal visible soiling if the colours and contrasts are not skilfully matched.

Preventive measures

In order to ensure that as little street dirt as possible is transferred to the fitted carpet, an effective dirt-absorbing zone is required, consisting of a device for wiping off coarse dirt and special matting and runners. Because dirt that stays outside does not need to be removed.

Care and cleaning

Maintenance and care must start as soon as the carpet has been laid. Especially the cleaning following carpet laying must be carried out thoroughly, not superficially.

Maintenance cleaning

This means the daily and thorough removal of loose dirt using powerful brush vacuum cleaners and the treating of any marks.

Brush vacuum cleaning should always be carried out in the running direction of the loop channels.

Loose dirt is effectively removed from the depths using a simultaneous brushing and suction action, with dirt stuck to the fibres being wiped off. It is also important to ensure that the brushes used are actually suited to the textile floor covering and adjusted to the correct height.

In the long run, however, wall-to-wall carpeting, especially when used in objects, cannot be kept clean using vacuum cleaners alone, especially the areas subject to most intensive use. In this case, maintenance must follow a set schedule in order to exploit the carpeting´s natural easy-care properties.

The dry cleaning System

In order to guarantee the quality and durability of the heavy-duty loop carpet with wool only dry cleaning should be used.

This is best achieved with regular cleaning using dry powder, enabling easy cleaning of parts of the carpet even during use because no drying time is required. The wall-to-wall carpeting can be walked on immediately afterwards and even during the cleaning process.

How is the dry cleaning powder used?

First the fitted carpet is vacuumed thoroughly. The cleaning powder is then sprinkled onto the area to be cleaned. The powder is then brushed into the carpet. This is preformed most effectively using special machines with two counter-rotating rolling brushes. This brush action allows the special dirt-dissolving agents in the powder to loosen the dirt from the carpet fibres and absorb it. The brushing action also removes marks.

With HØJER KONTRAKT® pile loop wall-to-wall carpeting, only clean with the brush vacuum cleaner in a lengthwise direction.

There should always only be as much powder on the carpet as can be immediately brushed in. Once the powder has been applied, the active cleaning agents within it are released and start to evaporate. The cleaning powder is active only when damp. The powder remains in the fitted carpet until it is fairly dry. Because the fitted carpet can be walked on during cleaning, the length of time is insignificant. The powder laden with dirt is now removed from the carpet by means of thorough vacuuming. It should be noted in this regard that vacuuming with brushes is much more effective than normal vacuuming with a simple suction nozzle. Problems which can arise with wet cleaning (e.g. open seams, line shrinkage, lines becoming detached from underside and so on) do not occur during dry cleaning.

Cleaning interval

If the intervals between individual cleanings are very long, it becomes impossible to remove marks completely. In addition, the carpet becomes generally shabby and grey, and its appearance deteriorates visibly. It is therefore better not to allow things to reach that stage but to keep the fitted carpet in good condition from the outset, even if it does nor appear dirty, with regular cleaning using cleaning powder. Powder cleaning can be used on all velour carpets and on all carpets made of loop yarns.

To place, meaning that a fitted carpet is most dirty where it is most frequently It is well known that a fitted carpet is never uniformly soiled. The level of dirt varies from place used. If this dirt is not removed on a continuous basis, new dirt forms and is transferred to clean areas of the carpet. If from the outset the more soiled areas, such as in and around doorways, in passageways, in front of counters, checkouts and such like, are treated with cleaning powder according to a specific schedule (after all, it is possible to walk on the carpet again immediately after cleaning), and the remaining areas are cleaned with brush vacuum cleaners, the whole fitted carpet will be kept in perfect condition constantly.
